Comedy Thursday at the Seahawks practice facility

There have been lot’s of laughs at the VMAC today, probably not at all coincidentally following a season-opening win. After covering the Huskies in 2007 (4-9) and 2008 (0-12), then the Seahawks last year (5-11), I’ve been around teams after plenty of losses, and the mood is definitely better following victories.

Pete Carroll has a name for each day in the week—tell the truth Monday, competition Wednesday, turnover Thursday, etc—but perhaps today should be comedy Thursday. Or, if the day passes without a roster move, maybe we should call it “No Roster Turnover Thursday” to at least stay close to Carroll’s name for the day.

When Matt Hasselbeck was asked about his team’s road woes, it was pointed out that Seattle hadn’t won a road game out of the division in the past two years. He replied with:

“Well, we haven’t beaten that many teams in general the last two years, so that stat doesn’t really surprise me that much”

Later, Hasselbeck was asked if he has ever dealt with problems getting calls on the headset in his helmet. He has, but he also admitted that he has, on one occasion, pretended he didn’t get the call in order to call his own play. There was one problem with that, however, that got him caught:

“What I failed to realize is that the other quarterbacks on the sideline have the headset, so you have to get in unison on that one.”

DT Colin Cole, meanwhile, showed off some bright, bright shoes, that he described as “Tennis ball green, baby.”

Later, when walking through the media room, Cole said of his shoes: “They were actually white, then my awesomeness bled into them.”

Neon awesomeness? We should all be so lucky.

Red Bryant also got a few chuckles today when talking about his sushi outings with fellow D-lineman Brandon Mebane. Now the following quote isn’t quite as funny in print as it was coming from a 330-pound bespectacled man with a Texas drawl, but it’s still worth passing along:

“I really don’t know what I be eating, I actually just be eating it.”

Back with more actual football stuff after practice.
