Churches give to Kids Kloset

Several local churches recently helped out Arlington Kids’ Kloset as part of the National Day of Service.

The Lakewood, Darrington and Arlington wards of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held a drive and on Sept. 11 delivered donations to the store. The donations included three racks of clothing, more than 40 bags of laundered items, four boxes of books, three boxes of toiletries, three boxes of school supplies, two boxes of shoes and accessories, and laundry detergent.

On the same day, the Arlington Seventh-day Adventist Church’s junior class delivered several boxes of books, hygiene items and school supplies.

Kids’ Kloset provides clothes for students in need who are in the Arlington, Lakewood and Darrington school districts. The organization provided 1,153 wardrobes last year and anticipates a greater need this year.

Airplane club raises funds for food bank

The Barnyard Buzzards Model Airplane Club recently raised $500 for the Sky Valley Food Bank.

Girl Scouts fight breast cancer

Girl Scouts from Cadette/Senior Troop 41899 donned decorated bras over their clothes, pink boas and tiaras on Saturday afternoon as they cheered for participants in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure. The girls supported walkers on their way through Everett. Many of the troop members have been together for about 10 years.

In the past few years, the Girl Scouts completed many service projects together, including cleaning up local parks, visiting with seniors and holding drives for the homeless.

Young singer shines at auction

Jervin Villena, 8, performed Saturday at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County annual grand gala auction.

The Emerson Elementary student sang “Hallelujah” in front of a dazzled audience of more than 300 people.

He was expected to sing again this week at a regional conference in Seattle.

Villena, a member of the Snohomish Boys & Girls Club, revealed his talent one day when he started singing in the gym, said Marci Owens, the club’s director.

The auction successfully met its goal and raised about $165,000 to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County.

Eagle Scout recognized

The Lynnwood post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars honored Eagle Scout Cameron Forbis, Troop 304, in a ceremony held Sept. 11 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynnwood.

Forbis is the 72nd Scout in south Snohomish County to receive the Veterans of Foreign Wars Eagle Scout Certificate since 2006.

Everett Chorale travels to Italy

Members of the Everett Chorale this summer got a chance to tour Italy as part of a choral festival.

The 35 members sang at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and gave a concert at the Basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva, along with 100 singers from other U.S. choirs.

Chorale members visited Florence, Venice, Verona and Sienna. While touring a music conservatory in Florence, the group sang in the courtyard and got a round of applause from the tourists there.

Property owners honored

Mountlake Terrace recently honored 20 property owners with the city’s Evergreen Award.

The award program aims to promote beautification of the city and to recognize people who take pride in maintaining their properties. The program also helps promote conservation.

The award has five categories: best-maintained residences, businesses, multifamily properties, sustainability and transformation.

One business, 14 homes from six neighborhoods and one multifamily property were recognized.

Two more awards were given to people who renovated their properties to become assets to the community, and two awards honored property owners who used green features to help preserve the environment. Officials also gave out 14 honorable mention awards.

Winners each got a plaque to display on their properties.
