Facelift for Red Cross office
Employees of local businesses worked on landscaping and repair project at the Snohomish County Red Cross office in Everett.
A team from TruGreen LandCare worked on landscaping, and a team from the Fluke Corp. helped with much-needed repairs at the old building as part of the companies’ United Way Days of Caring projects.
Lynnwood police receive grant
Lynnwood Police Department recently got $900 from Target to buy a digital camera and upgrade GPS maps.
The Lynnwood Target also supports the community during the National Night Out events and the police department’s annual Shop With a Cop program.
Mill Creek church shares harvest
Volunteers at the Garden of Giving at Advent Lutheran Church in Mill Creek have harvested and donated more than 1,382 pounds of food for the Volunteers of America Food Bank.
About 30 volunteers have been planting, weeding and harvesting produce at the garden hoping to beat last year’s crop of 2,130 pounds.
Windermere holds food drive
Staff at the Windermerer Real Estate/M2 LLC on Sept. 15 held their second annual Food Dash at the Safeway in Silver Lake.
Owner Dave Maider had two minutes to fill carts with groceries, which were sponsored by Windermere agents. The drive brought in more than $530 worth of food, which will be donated to Volunteers of America as part of the Snohomish County-Camano Association of Realtors Annual Food Drive.
Cystic fibrosis benefit in Monroe
Stanza Performing Arts in Monroe held a benefit Sept. 17 to raise money for cystic fibrosis research.
The first Breathin’ is Believin’ Cystic Fibrosis Benefit honored Cody Dieruf, who died at the age of 23 from cystic fibrosis. Guests were treated to an evening of art, dance, food and beverages.
HONORS
EvCC art instructor honored Friday
Russell Day, a former art instructor at Everett Community College, has been selected to receive the 2010 Distinguished Service Award from the Washington Art Education Association, the association’s highest honor.
Day taught at Everett Junior College and EvCC from 1948 until 1974 and created the first Everett Junior College art gallery in the 1950s.
In 2008, EvCC renamed its art gallery in Day’s honor. The Russell Day Gallery is currently closed for remodeling as part of the improvements to the college’s Parks Student Union and is expected to reopen in September 2011.
Day is scheduled to receive the award during the Arts Time convention’s WAEA evening reception at 7 p.m. Friday at the Tukwila Community Center, 12424 42nd Ave. S., Tukwila.
Scouts honored for help with derby
Everett Central Lions Club will honor 10 members of Boy Scout Troop 120 for their help with the annual Everett Central Lions Fishing Derby for the Blind.
The troop has been involved with the derby for about 10 years, helping to weigh and bag the fish. For their volunteer work, 10 Boy Scouts this year will receive the Lions’ Serving Communities Together uniform patch.
The Everett Central Lions Club has been organizing the fishing derby for blind and visually impaired people for 66 years.
EdCC poet’s work earns two honors
An anthology edited by poet and Edmonds Community College English instructor Holly Hughes won national awards.
“Beyond Forgetting: Poetry and Prose about Alzheimer’s Disease” was recognized by the Independent Book Publishers Association and the American Medical Writers Association.
Fraternal order awards scholarships
The Improved Order of Red Men, Pilchuck Tribe No. 42, this year awarded 13 $1,000 scholarships to students. The order is the oldest fraternal organization in the United States. The scholarship winners are:
Cynthia Holl, Tana Thompson, Jadelyn Thompson, Tyler Thompson, Lauren Facchini, Ethan Landstrom, Krei Bogart, Loren Johnson, Marissa Nishimoto, Jacklyn McDowell, Asheleigh Lyons, Marissa Lyons and Kaly Engle. The students are studying education, accounting, communication, business, trade and working toward their doctoral degrees.
Colonist group attends assembly
The Pilchuck chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonists joined three other chapters in September at the annual state assembly.
Members gathered for a candlelight dinner and heard a presentation by an Olympia historian on Sept. 10.
A luncheon was held Sept. 11, and the members honored the Women Airforce Service Pilots and learned about their history.
