Snohomish troupe stages spoof of Christmas classics

SNOHOMISH— Lovers of Christmas stories will have a chance to see all of them in one go.

They also will have a chance to laugh.

The Snohomish Theatre Project at the Carnegie presents its original play, “A Christmas Epic! It’s a Wonderful Grinch Story on 34th Carol.”

The all-ages play is a spoof of favorite Christmas stories written with hopes to make children and grown-ups laugh, playwright Eric Lewis said.

“It’s to laugh at ourselves and to laugh at what is going on in our culture,” Lewis said.

The play is scheduled at 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, Dec. 10, 11, 17 and 18; and at 2 p.m., Sunday Dec. 12 and 19, at the Carnegie Education Center, 105 Cedar Ave., in Snohomish.

Admission is free but the group accepts donations. Non-perishable food donations are asked as well to benefit the Snohomish Food Bank.

The play is a retelling of classics like “A Christmas Carol,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” among others. In this version, Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three different spirits in an attempt to discover the Christmas spirit.

The story mostly follows “A Christmas Carol,” except than in this version, characters from other Christmas stories make guest appearances.

The play was mostly written by Pat Ainsworth, of Monroe. Lewis, who is also the director, has written other scenes with the help of cast members. These scenes, which will feature Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, were not shown last year.

This is the second time the play will be staged in Snohomish. It was so well received that people were waiting for its return, Lewis said.

The one-act play runs about 80 minutes.

Thirteen actors will perform, five of them ages 5 to 13 years old.

All are volunteers and have done community theater in the past, Lewis said.

“Putting us all together, we have at least 100 years of experience,” he said.

The performers are from different cities including Monroe, Edmonds, Duvall and Redmond.

Tom Cook, of Everett, leads the play with his performance of Scrooge. The rest of the cast will perform from four to 10 different characters, Lewis said.

This is the only play the troupe is scheduled to perform. Lewis hopes the group could do outside theater in the spring and summer. Meanwhile the troupe is searching for a new venue to perform in while the Carnegie Education Center is being remodeled, Lewis said. The play is sponsored in part by the Snohomish Carnegie Foundation and Arts of Snohomish.
