SNOHOMISH — A trip to visit her granddaughter turned into a lottery win for resident Sarah Heter.
Heter, a Boeing employee, won $200,000 playing Powerball on Saturday. Heter and her husband were on their way home after visiting their granddaughter, who is a student at Pacific Lutheran University. They stopped at an AM/PM store on Pacific Avenue in Tacoma and she bought $5 worth of Powerball tickets.
When she checked her numbers on Monday night, Heter wasn’t sure what having five of the six numbers correct meant. When she asked she found out it was a good thing.
Her family and friends were all excited to hear she had won, Heter told officials with the Washington Lottery. Heter said she plans to buy her granddaughter a TV and put the rest of her winnings toward her and her husband’s retirement.
Heter chose the numbers, 9-13-22-23-37, to win the second tier Powerball jackpot. The jackpot is won by matching five numbers out of six, according to Michael Eggerling, spokesman for Washington Lottery.
“Sarah hit all but one — the powerball,” Eggerling said. “The powerball is the more difficult number to hit.”
Washington Lottery added Powerball to it game line up on last year. Since then, four people in the state have won $200,000 jackpots and 47 have won $10,000 after choosing four correct numbers and the powerball, according to Eggerling.
The AM/PM store where Heter bought the winning ticket will receive a $2,000 retail selling bonus.
