EVERETT — Everett wrestling coach Brien Elliott says his team shouldn't be considered a juggernaut. And that may be the case. But there's no question the Seagulls have looked pretty good this season.

Everett capped a perfect league season by easily handling Meadowdale 55-13 Thursday at Norm Lowery Gym and the Seagulls seem poised to make some noise at the district meet.

“We've still got a lot of work to do,” Elliott said. “It was a good night and nice to see our seniors go out with a win, but we're still working and have a ways to go.”

Everett finished 7-0 in Wesco 3A and is 9-2 overall. Elliott said he wasn't sure this was a team that was particularly special when the season began.

“This group needed a lot of work, and still does as evident by some of what we saw tonight,” Elliott said. “We are not a powerhouse. We're just a group that works hard, practices a lot and tries to compete every match. But we've got a wide variety of kids and experience, and it hasn't come easy.”

Indeed, Everett graduated a solid core from a team that finished ninth at last year's state tournament, including 215-pound state champion Alec Bird, Jerry Contreras (fourth at 160) and Danny Lopez (fifth at 171).

“Last year I looked at our JV and I was kind of scared,” said senior Joel Palabrica, one of this season's leading contenders to place high at state. “We lost some of our top guys, but we've had people really step up for us.”

Everett wasted little time in taking control of the match. Palabrica led off with a 14-4 major decision at 140 pounds and Tyler Dutton had a 16-1 technical fall at 145 for a 9-0 Everett lead.

“I felt I wrestled pretty good,” said Palabrica, ranked No. 2 at his weight among Class 3A wrestlers. “But there's always a lot of work to do.”

Everett then reeled off three pins in a row, starting with freshman Anthony Hawkins at 152 ending his match in 1 minute, 25 seconds, followed by pins from Connor Boyce in 4:56 and Zach Skorka in 4:54 for a commanding 27-0 Everett lead.

Meadowdale got its biggest highlight at 189 pounds when freshman Ciaran Ball got a takedown and a near fall in the first round and made it stand up in upsetting senior Brayden Jacobson 5-4. Jacobson is one of Everett's top contenders for a state medal.

“It was good to see Meadowdale come in and show their really making progress,” Elliott said. “They did a lot of things that impressed me and it's good for the league when we've got a lot of tough teams to compete against.”

Ball's win was just a speed bump for Everett, as senior Layne Gandrud got a pin in 1:58 at 215 pounds and Levi Carroll, the No. 2-ranked heavyweight at 3A, got a 47-second pin to put Everett in front 39-3.

Jessie Lopez, the only returning state placer for the Seagulls (7th at 103), earned an 11-1 major decision over Nathan Park at 119 pounds and senior Domonic Simonelli got a pin in 1:07 at 125 pounds for Everett.

Meadowdale did finish the match strong, as junior Dustin Diemond had a surprising 14-0 major decision over junior Zane Crook, who was ranked seventh in 3A at 130 pounds. Maverick sophomore Morgan Smith finished the night with a third-round pin at 135 pounds.

Now, Everett turns its attention to the district meet, set to take place Feb. 4-5 at Sedro-Woolley High School.

“We've faced a lot of good teams in our league,” Elliott said. “That helps us as we move along, especially when we get to the postseason. It lets us know where we're at and what we've got to work on, and hopefully we're able to do that and keep getting better.”
