Everett finishes fifth in Class 3A district wrestling tournament

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — Though the team competition was largely controlled by teams from the north part of the state, there were plenty of local highlights in the 3A Northwest District 1 Wrestling Tournament at Sedro-Wooley High School Saturday.

Nine wrestlers from Wesco 3A teams took individual titles among the 14 weight classes.

Everett was the top school from Snohomish County, finishing fifth in the team competition. The Seagulls advanced seven wrestlers to next week’s district meet.

“It was about what we expected, but we were hoping for nine,” Everett coach Brien Elliott said.

The most impressive Seagull was Connor Boyce, who bounced back from a 2-0 deficit early in the 160-pound championship to edge Glacier Peak’s Sean Elledge 5-4.

One of the surprises of the meet was Everett’s Zach Skorka. The junior 171-pounder started the season 2-9 in individual bouts, but improved all season on the way to a loss in the finals to Mountlake Terrace’s lone champion Taylor Call, who won the 171-pound crown with a 5-0 decision.

“He (Skorka) just wrestled outstanding,” Elliott said. “That was a nice surprise.”
