TULALIP — All three incumbents on the Tulalip Tribal Board of Directors retained their seats in the tribes’ annual election Saturday.
Mel Sheldon, Jr., Glen Gobin and Chuck James, Jr. were re-elected from a field of 17 candidates, according to state Rep. John McCoy, D-Tulalip, one of the candidates for the board. The incumbents kept their positions by being the top three vote-getters.
Tribal members voted at the Tulalip Casino. A record 1,055 people participated, McCoy said. “I was quite proud of them all for showing up,” he said.
Tribal members also elected candidates to positions on the seven-member board. Sheldon retained his chairmanship, while Gobin, who had been an at-large board member, was elected vice chair. James kept his position as treasurer.
Terms are for three years. Elections are held as terms come up for renewal, in groups of three, two and two at a time. Elections are held every year to elect positions within the board.
None of the re-elected board members could be reached for comment Saturday. The other four board members are Marlin Fryberg, Jr.; Marie Zackuse; Don Hatch, Jr. and Mark Hatch.
In addition to McCoy and the three winners, the other candidates were Angel Cortez; Tony M. Hatch; Dale M. Jones; Shirley D. Jones; Harold E. Joseph, Jr.; Martin Napeahi; Deborah Parker; Les Parks; Margie Santibanez; Danny Simpson; Herman A. Williams, Jr.; Keith Andrew Williams and Valerie Williams Finkbonner.
