EVERETT — The mayor and the Everett City Council may each get a pay raise — but not until at least 2013.
They may not get one even then unless the Consumer Price Index goes up.
That’s the recommendation of the city’s Salary Review Commission, which has put together a proposal now available for public review.
Mayor Ray Stephanson currently makes $154,956.72 annually and City Council members earn $26,279.52. City Council president Shannon Affholter makes slightly more: $34,164.
By comparison, Gov. Chris Gregoire’s annual salary is $166,891, the mayor of Seattle gets $170,986, and the Bellevue city manager, who’s responsible for day-to-day operations, earns $224,430.
The Everett proposal ties pay raises to the Consumer Price Index and it stipulates that the overall salary bump cannot exceed 3.6 percent. For the mayor, that would be a maximum of $5,578.44 annually and for council members $946.06.
If the index goes down or doesn’t increase, elected officials get no pay raises.
The commission is made up of seven people. Two are appointed by the City Council. One is appointed by the mayor. The rest are appointed by the other board members.
Serving on the commission are C.J. Ebert, Gigi Burke, Larry Jubie, Chris Hoiby, Andrea Wells-Edwards, Morrie Trautman and Chuck Patten.
The council originally had appointed Clair Oliver to fill Burke’s position, but he had to step down after the city realized he had a family member who works for the city.
The public may comment at the following public hearing dates:
Noon, Monday, March 21, eighth-floor hearing room, Wall Street Building, 2930 Wetmore Ave.
