SNOHOMISH — The City Council took the first step in an effort to increase the sales tax.
Now, it’s up to the voters to decide.
On Tuesday, the council, acting as the Transportation Benefit District, unanimously approved a ballot proposal to increase the city’s sales tax by 0.2 percent. The measure is scheduled to be put before voters on the Aug. 16 primary ballot.
The projected $660,000 annual revenue from the increase would be used for street maintenance, building a roundabout at Bickford Avenue and 15th Street, and adding an extra lane at 30th Street and Highway 9. The proposed roundabout would cost about $700,000. The extra 300 feet of lane at 30th Street would cost about $500,000.
If voters approve the increase, Snohomish sales tax will increase to 8.8 percent from 8.6 percent, about 9 cents on a $1 purchase, just above that in Marysville and Monroe. It will stay below the 9.2 percent rate in Everett and the 9.5 percent charged in Lynnwood.
