MILL CREEK — A break-dancing competition is planned for Saturday night to raise money for Kayla Healy, a Jackson High School senior battling cystic fibrosis.
More than 200 people are expected to attend the Fresh Breath B-Boy Jam Fundraiser to support Kayla, 17, and have some fun. The public is invited to attend.
Cystic fibrosis takes away a person’s lung capacity. In Kayla’s case, it’s progressed to the point that she needs a double lung transplant. The out-of-pocket cost for her family could be $100,000, so Kayla’s friends and classmates have been raising money for the operation.
Kayla stopped going to school several weeks ago, said her uncle, Matt Gangemi.
“Doctors told her that she needs not to exert herself too much,” he said. “She’s moved up on the list for transplants.”
Saturday night’s event will be a battle of 18 break-dancing teams. Bo Bunphoath, a break-dancer and fellow Jackson student, organized the competition as part of a school project. Kayla plans to be there.
The Mill Creek Family YMCA offered its gym for the night. The event is planned from 6 to 9 p.m. at 13723 Puget Park Drive, Everett. A suggested cash donation for entry is $5 or $10, at the door.
