SHORELINE — Dustin Duke is a revered name in Snohomish County running circles, based on his exploits in both track and field and cross country for Jackson High School during the late 1990s.
But Friday evening Jeff Bastian erased Duke’s name from at least one record book.
The Glacier Peak senior smashed a record Duke held for more than a decade, dominating the 3,200 meters at the boys Class 3A District 1 track and field meet at Shoreline Stadium.
Bastian’s previous best time was well off the time of 9 minutes, 10.10 seconds that Duke ran in 1999. But Bastian ran the 3,200 of his life Friday, giving himself room to spare for the record as he raced home in 9:07.05. He was at his strongest during the final lap as he weaved through lapped traffic.
“I was going for 9:10, I knew that was meet record, and I’d run a 9:16 before,” Bastian said. “So I knew if I picked up a couple seconds on laps five, six and seven, I felt like I could get it. I felt great. I was was pushing a good pace those middle laps, and I was good closing. I’m ecstatic with that time.”
The victory was Bastian’s second of the meet as he won the 1,600 during Wednesday’s first day.
While Bastian was turning in the individual performance of the meet, Everett was busy making sure coach Doug Hall went out with a trophy. Hall, Everett’s long-time coach who is stepping down after this season, was hoisted up onto his athletes’ shoulders after the Seagulls claimed the team title with 114.5 points. That was 9.5 better than second-place Shorecrest.
“I think we competed really well,” said Everett senior Ty Sissel, who qualified for state in three events. “Everybody stepped up with (personal records). We usually step up in circumstances like this.
“Track is an individual sport to most people, but at Everett we take it like a team, which is really good.”
Sissel’s best effort came in the 300 hurdles, where he blew the field away in winning in 40.21. He also finished second in the 110 hurdles and was part of Everett’s 400 relay team that also placed second.
Senior Spencer McKinnon picked up Everett’s other victory of the day as the Seagulls rode their depth in the sprints to the team title. McKinnon made up for a disappointing eighth-place in the 100 by powering away late in the 200 to win in 22.35.
Friday’s field events proved fertile ground for Snohomish county athletes, with two of those being significant upsets.
Mountlake Terrace senior Owen Fritz came into the meet with the sixth-best seed mark in the discus. However, he obliterated his previous best by more than 10 feet, winning the competition with a throw of 150 feet, 4 inches.
Meadowdale senior Owen Mather pulled off a similar result. Mather came into the meet seeded fifth in the triple jump. But he leaped his way to the top spot with a jump of 41-7.5.
The javelin was a different story. Glacier Peak senior Erik Larsen was the heavy favorite with a seed mark more than nine feet better than the rest of the competition, and he came through with a winning toss of 176-3.
A pair of local runners tabbed themselves as contenders for high placings at state with their performances Friday. Lynnwood senior Nate Schmidt held off a large challenging pack in the 400 to win in 50.41. Glacier Peak senior Sean White went out strong in the 800, building a large early lead and winning comfortably in 1:54.65.
