Mariner’s Russell picked

Mariner running back/defensive back KeiVarae Russell has been nominated to play in the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Russell is one of 440 nominees. The 90 finalists will be selected in December. The game is scheduled for January at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

“This is a great honor for KeiVarae and Mariner,” Mariner coach John Ondriezek. “For Mariner to have a re[presentative in that game would be a great accomplishment.”

Ondriezek said Russell has 15 football scholarship offers on the table, including ones from Notre Dame, Boise State and almost every Pac-10 school. Russell, Mariner’s student body president, has a 3.9 grade point average and takes mostly honors classes.

“I think he has an excellent chance (of making the final 90),” Ondriezek said.

Wrestling Hall selections

Steve Anderson of Lake Stevens and Rick Iversen of Marysville Pilchuck are among 10 coaches selected to be inducted into the Washington chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. June 11 at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Everett.

Anderson began coaching at Lake Stevens in 1978. His Viking teams won two Wesco AA championships. Anderson was an active participant in the Washington State Wrestling Cultural Exchange program, hosting several Japanese teams. In 1984 he led the first group of high school wrestlers to tour the People’s Republic of China. Anderson was a co-founder of the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association and a founding director of Mat Classic. He retired from coaching in 1986.

Iversen coached at Western Washington University before moving to Marysville Pilchuck in 1978. His teams at MP finished second in the state twice (1988, 1991) and his teams produced a 188-63-2 dual-meert record over 19 years. Iversen was named the 1988 Class AAA Coach of the Year and was inducted into the state coaches Hall of Fame in 1999.
