The Indiana Fever might have the Minnesota Lynx to thank for this.
The Seattle Storm aren’t shooting the ball as well as they sometimes do, but that is about all that isn’t going right. Sue Bird even banked in a three-pointer falling down at the buzzer to end the first half, giving the Storm a commanding 37-19 lead.
The Storm’s offense is always dangerous, but it is the defense that is winning them this game. The Fever shot an ice-cold 4-for-21 in the first half, and the WNBA’s leading scorer Katie Douglas (21.3 points per game) scored just four points. Douglas is tied with Tangela Smith for the team lead in points.
Meanwhile, the Storm are even more balanced than usual — seven of the nine players that saw action in the first half have scored. It isn’t Lauren Jackson, Sue Bird or Swin Cash that lead the team in first half scoring, but off the bench, Le’coe Willingham has scored eight points to pace the attack. With Bird’s buzzer-beater, she trails just behind with seven points. Cash has six points and Jackson has five points, all of which she scored in the first quarter.
Every team has a bad night every once in a while — the Storm are sending a message that all the loss to Minnesota was, was a bad night. The Fever are the unfortunate recipient of that message.
Here we go with the second half.
