EVERETT — Troopers shut down southbound I-5 in south Everett for hours Thursday night after a fatal wrong-way crash.
The wreck happened about 5:25 p.m., south of 128th Street SW. An Everett man, 54, was killed, and another man was taken to a Seattle hospital with serious injuries.
After the crash, witnesses told troopers they saw the Everett man northbound in a red Mitsubishi sport utility vehicle at an “extremely high rate of speed,” said trooper Keith Leary of the Washington State Patrol.
The SUV crossed through the median, which dips down and back up, and went into the southbound lanes going the wrong way, Leary said.
The SUV made it about 1,500 feet before sideswiping another SUV and then crashing head-on into a white Dodge Durango.
The Everett man was found dead at the scene. The Durango’s driver, an 18-year-old man, had to be extricated by fire crews.
He was taken to Harborview Medical Center with serious injuries to his legs and pelvis, Leary said. His injuries aren’t believed to be life-threatening.
Debris from the crash hit several other vehicles, Leary said. No other injuries were reported.
The crash remains under investigation.
