EVERETT — Two teens charged with causing extensive vandalism inside Snohomish High School on the Fourth of July entered not guilty pleas Thursday in juvenile court.
A Lynnwood boy, 17, and Snohomish girl, 16, were arres
ted early Monday for investigation of second-degree burglary and first-degree malicious mischief. The girl also was charged with third-degree assault. She reportedly spat in the face of a police officer.
The two are accused of smashing and dumping up to 50 computers in the school’s library. Several hundred books were tossed onto the library floor.
Police also found several broken windows, a shattered display case and broken trophies.
A 3:20 a.m. call from an alarm company alerted officers to two people inside the school’s B building. The company reported hearing “younger voices” from inside the building, according to court records.
The vandalism occurred in the library, the attendance office, counseling office and some hallways, according to the Snohomish School District.
Police spotted the teens walking through a doorway on the southeast corner of the building. They ran when police ordered them to stop. They were cornered and began to comply with police once they reached an enclosed chain-link fence, police said.
“The odor of intoxicants coming from both subjects was overwhelming and obvious,” police wrote in a report that was filed in court.
The girl was wearing white plastic gloves, police said. She said she found them in the building, but refused to make a statement after being read her constitutional rights.
The boy allegedly told police that he and the girl caused the damage inside the building. He said he reached through a broken window to unlock a door to get inside the building.
Damage at the scene could top $100,000. The school district has insurance coverage with a $10,000 deductible.
