Class of 2012 Jackson High School baseball player Sam Brown verbally committed to the University of Arizona, Jackson coach Kirk Nicholson said this morning.
Arizona made a scholarship offer to Brown last week, Nicholson said. This past spring Brown, a three-sport athlete, made The Herald’s All-Area First Team as an outfielder and was an All-Wesco South 4A First Team selection as a pitcher and outfielder.

I just did a phone interview with Brown. He told me Arizona baseball coach Andy Lopez offered Brown a scholarship on Friday, and Brown verbally accepted the offer on Sunday.
“I was pretty pumped. They were one of the first schools to show interest in me,” said Brown, who plans to sign an NCAA National Letter of Intent with Arizona in November.
Arizona recruited Brown to play outfield. Wildcats coaches began watching him during this past high school season and were impressed by Brown’s speed, hustle, and leadership ability, said Brown. The Jackson High senior-to-be is thrilled about the opportunity to fulfill one of his longtime dreams.
“It was always a goal of mine to play Pac-10 baseball,” he said. “Arizona is the cream of the crop.”
Several teams have expressed interest in Brown, but Arizona made the first offer, Brown said.
I made plans to interview Brown in person on Friday for an upcoming Summer Daze story. I will post a video interview here on the Double Team blog, and my Summer Daze story about Brown will probably appear in The Herald within the next couple weeks.
