Lincoln saw this day coming

May we respond to Tuesday’s letter, “Entitled Left can’t handle reality“? Oh, and before you throw the paper down thinking we’re just crazy lefties, please read it all:

“The money powers prey upon the nation in times of peace and conspire against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than a monarchy, more insolent than autocracy and more selfish than bureaucracy. It denounces as public enemies all who question its methods or throw light upon its crimes. I have two great enemies, the Southern Army in front of me and the Bankers in the rear. Of the two, the one at my rear is my greatest foe. Corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow and the money powers of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working on the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in the hands of a few, and the republic is destroyed.” — Abraham Lincoln.

Does any of this sound even vaguely familiar to anyone else? My guess is this speech was in response to a decision and/or pending decision by the Supreme Court in 1860, calling corporations “a person” thereby insuring their longevity and also making it legal for them to contribute to political campaigns for the first time. And all this was under the guise of freedom of speech.

Speaking of reality, that wonderful prosperity spoken of in the letter is really being attained by only a “select” few today. And it seems they want more! Don’t take my word for it, just ask your neighbors. Oh sorry, that’s right; they had to give up their house and move. God bless capitalism!
