MARYSVILLE — A new Marysville Family YMCA Youth Development Center is scheduled to open soon.
The 3,400-square-foot building will provide space for teen programming and a computer lab. A grand-opening ceremony is set for 10 a.m. Aug. 31 at the center located next to the Marysville Family YMCA at 6420 60th Drive NE. Tours and family activities are also planned throughout the day.
The building was built in the 1990s and formerly housed the Marysville Community Food Bank, said Scott Washburn, YMCA of Snohomish County president. The food bank is now located at 4150 88th St. NE.
The Youth Development Center is expected to serve about 2,000 youth per year, said Reeshemah Davis, executive director of the Marysville Family YMCA. A Teen Center and programs including ACT!, a youth obesity program, the Exercise & Thrive cancer survivor program, and a state funded parenting class are scheduled to be run out of the new space.
The center is designed to serve ages 10 to 18 and will offer free teen programs at times teens are not in school, Davis said. A YMCA membership is not needed to participate.
“A lot of our programs are free to teens,” Davis said. “If they want to become a member we do offer teen memberships and the majority of teen members are on scholarships.”
The building took two months to renovate, Davis added. Tulalip Tribes donated money to purchase the building and Fineline Fixture & Case in Marysville donated the cabinets and counter work that was built into the center. The original architect for the food bank, Bob Wicks, also donated his time to design the new space.
“We tracked him down and he was gracious enough to donate services,” Davis said.
