ARLINGTON — It’s back-to-school time and people in Arlington and Lakewood are making sure no child goes without a backpack full of new supplies.
Church groups plan to present the annual Arlington Back2School Rally at 3 p.m. Sunday at Presidents Elementary, 505 E. Third St.
A presentation recognizing teachers and staff is scheduled to be followed by the distribution of free books and backpacks, free haircuts and dental checks, PTA registration, free snacks and activities for children.
Kids Kloset volunteers plan to be on hand to set up appointments for students who need clothing.
Last year’s rally served about 500 children, organizers said.
“When the kids you love need something, suddenly your focus becomes clear,” said event coordinator Brandie Broadhead, who is the children’s pastor at Arlington Assembly of God. “The success of the rally depends on generous donations from business owners and individuals.”
To make a donation to the effort, go online to www.arlington backpack.com to view a list of items still needed and drop-off locations, and to find out more about volunteering to stuff the backpacks and help at the rally.
Parents whose children are in need of a backpack must register at www.arlingtonbackpack.com or call Broadhead at 360-435-8981. Children who are registered must pick up their backpacks in person at the rally. All supplies are personalized to each child’s school and grade requirements in the Arlington and Lakewood school districts.
The next backpack-stuffing workshop is set for 9 a.m. Thursday at Arlington Assembly of God, 201 N. Stillaguamish Ave.
