MARYSVILLE — An incumbent Marysville School Board member is up against a school principal on the November ballot.

Darci Becker, 44, has served on the school board for the past five years. She was first appointed in July 2006 and was then elected to the Director District No. 3 Position seat in the 2007 general election.

Becker wants a second full-term to work to create more opportunities for students with different learning styles throughout the district and to help bring more volunteers into the district. She could not be reached for additional comment.

Pete Lundberg, 62, is the interim principal this school year at Centennial Middle School in the Snohomish School District. He spent 18 years as the principal at Marysville Middle School before retiring two years ago. This is his first time running for an elected position.

“At the time I filed I was retired,” he said. “When I retired I told myself that if a school board seat opened I would go for it. I thought it was a give back that would be perfect for me.”

Lundberg said he wants to help the district improve its relationship with its constituents and to help make sure all students succeed. That may mean focusing more on reaching out to different groups of parents, he said

“The school district is now approaching 20 percent Hispanic,” Lundberg said. “The Hispanic groups are very much underrepresented in being connected to schools. We need to open the lines of communication better with Hispanic parents.”

Three other Marysville School Board incumbents are running unopposed in November for their positions.

Five members make up the Marysville School Board. Board members serve four-year terms. They are paid $50 for each meeting, up to a maximum of $4,800, according to state law.

The Marysville School District includes Marysville and Tulalip.
