Glacier Peak girls conquer Hole in the Wall

MARYSVILLE — Amy-Eloise Neale makes running and winning look easy.

Neale won the Hole in the Wall Invitational on Saturday, beating her nearest competition, teammate Katie Bianchini, by 31 seconds.

Neale, who finished the race in 17 minutes and 45 seconds and broke her own course record, and Bianchini, who finished in 18:16, easily led the No.1-ranked Grizzlies to the girls team title. The Grizzlies finished with 42 points. Their nearest competition, Redmond, had 83.

“This was a tough week for us training,” Glacier Peak coach Dan Parker said of the girls. “We went easy the last two weeks because we had Stanford then we had Sunfair. But this week was a hard week because we knew this was going to be a difficult meet and next week is going to be a real hard week. They came in here tired, but they still ran well.

Parker was happy with his entire team’s performance.

“We had some good performances particularly by — not so much Amy-Eloise and Katie, we knew what they would do — but Marlee Rothschild and Megan Davis ran really well today,” Parker said. “And Marren Haneberg keeps moving up for us.”

Davis finished eighth in 19:11, Rothschild finished 12th in 19:16 and Haneberg 19th in 19:45.

Parker said that Neale can run much faster than she showed on Saturday.

“She will probably go 30 seconds under that two weeks from now,” Parker said, referring to how he think she will do at the league championship meet.

Lakewood was well represented as the host school by Rachel Cundy, who finished 14th with a time of 19:31.

“I was real pleased with Rachel’s run,” Lakewood coach Jeff Sowards said.

The highest local finisher in the boys race was Cascade’s Steven Statham, who finished in 10th place (16:21).

Glacier Peak’s highest boys finisher was Michael Matwichuk in 25th place (16:55). Despite the lack of Grizzlies near the top of the leaderboard, Glacier Peak earned fourth place as a team with 183 points. Sehome won the team title with 94 points, Redmond finished second with 108 and Ballard third with 174.

“My guys are really young,” Parker said. “Super young and inexperienced. But there is a good core and they run well as a team. If they keep going like they are going we could possibly win the league, district and go to state, which would be amazing.”

Redmond won the overall championship, which combines the girls and boys scores with 191 points. Sehome finished second with 212 and Glacier Peak was third with 225.

It was the biggest Hole in the Wall invitational it the event’s 28 years. Runners from 29 different schools were represented in the varsity boys division, while 27 different schools were represented on the girls side.

Sowards was happy with how the event came off.

“Overall I thought things went really well,” Sowards said. “Whoever ordered up the sun and brought that was awesome. That always makes for happy faces and happy people. The course stayed, even though we had a little rain this week, the course stayed pretty firm.”
