EVERETT — The chairs are neon green and the shelves include an extensive collection of Anime books.
And there’s nary a pesky younger sibling in sight.
Teens finally have a place of their own at the main branch of the Everett Public Library. The new teen center, on the main floor of the library, includes a magnetic wall and giant magnetic words to allow kids to write their own stories. There is comfy seating and coffee tables.
There’s lots of display shelving for new books and media, and new computers are set to be installed in the next several weeks.
All of that is a first for the Everett library, which has never before had a space set aside for teenagers.
“It’s nice to have a space away from where the little kids are supposed to be,” said Valeria Cornejo, 12.
Visitors to the library this month also may notice other upgrades, too, including new carpet and fresh paint.
The entire project, including all the upgrades, cost nearly $275,000. Most comes from private donations.
The library plans to install self-checkers at both branches of the library sometime after Thanksgiving, too.
Library staff have been planning this project and raising money for nearly two years.
Brianna Kitchell, a 14-year-old freshman from Everett High School, likes what she sees. Wednesday night she was scouring the shelves for a research book on the Holocaust.
“I won’t be bumping into little kids,” she said.
