EVERETT — Students at Everett Community College could play some pick-up basketball in the new Student Fitness Center — or wander through and check out the architecture.
The center, completed earlier this year, is racking up awards for its design.
The International Interior Design Association and American Institute of Architects each awarded the fitness center citations.
Judges praised the building for its “comprehensive and cohesive feel,” noting the connection between the interior and exterior of the building and use of color on the inside to bring “life and cohesiveness to interior spaces.”
The 49,000-square-foot center has a sparse, utilitarian aesthetic.
Architect and project manager Stan Jaworowski called it “a very raw space.”
He noted that one of the things the judges responded to was the presence of natural light in every part of the building, even the locker rooms.
This space remained at its core utilitarian. Much of the building served multiple functions, such as the lobby which also features a climbing wall.
The firm SRG Partnership, Inc. of Seattle designed the building. Jane Hendricks oversaw the project, and Rick Ziev was lead designer. The general contractor was California-headquartered Panattoni, which has an office in Tukwila.
The $19.5 million center includes classrooms for physical education and health programs, a gym with retractable bleacher seating for 2,250 people, a cardio and free-weight training room, a climbing wall, running track, juice bar, a multi-purpose small gym and offices for faculty and staff. The center also includes space for intercollegiate athletics and activities.
