The crew of SnoHawk 10, the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office helicopter, practice high-rise rescues in Seattle in October.

When Bill Quistorf was in school, he didn't understand why he had to study subjects like math, English and computer skills. As the Snohomish County sheriff's chief pilot, Quistorf ended up using it all, he said.

He likes to share that message with children during free educational visits to local elementary and middle schools.

During the visits, he talks about law enforcement, firefighting and rescue helicopter operations.

The talks are meant to get children interested in how academics apply to professional jobs such as being a pilot, Quistorf said.

"It gives them an idea of why they're in class and how that could help them in a job and a profession in the future," he said.

Quistorf said he is always impressed by how smart the kids are, even the young ones.

"They come up with some really good questions," he said.

The visits are available to public and private schools, as well as organized home-school groups. Field trips to the Snohomish County Search and Rescue facility also can be arranged.
