LYNNWOOD — Wal-Mart filed its application with the city earlier this week to renovate an existing building for its newest store.
It could take several weeks before the permit can be issued, Economic Development Director David Kleitsch said.
City Council approval is not required since the big-box store is using an existing building and the business already fits the zoning code, he said.
Environmental review is also not required.
Wal-Mart wants to renovate a building located at 17222 Highway 99 to open as a “neighborhood market,” which would be about 45,000 square feet, or a quarter the size of its super centers, and the first of its kind in the state of Washington.
The 3.7-acre property was bought by Wal-Mart on Aug. 30 for about $6.95 million, according to the Snohomish County Assessor’s Office website. Since there’s a building already at the location, formerly the Cycle Barn, Wal-Mart would begin renovations in the spring.
The smaller store is expected to employ about 95 people. The store would sell fresh produce, bakery items and household supplies among other things.
