Village Theatre Pied Piper stages classic children's story

"If You Give a Moose a Muffin": A young boy is quite surprised when a giant moose arrives in his kitchen after smelling freshly cooked muffins wafting in the air.

The boy gives the moose a muffin -- natch -- but it turns out that when you give a moose a muffin, he is going to want some jam to go with it.

Your mother's blackberry jam to be exact.

And then this classic children's book by author Laura Numeroff takes off as the hungry moose and young host realize a chain of events that takes them from sock puppets to staging a show, complete with elaborate scenery.

Village Theatre Pied Piper is presenting this popular story produced by Magik Theatre Company with cast members from Magik Theatre performing.

"If You Give a Moose a Muffin" is the Numeroff sequel to "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie."

One hour before the play starts, young people are invited to participate in pre-show arts, crafts and fun in partnership with Imagine Children's Museum. Village Theatre will also host a holiday party between performances with treats and a "special visitor."

"If You Give a Moose a Muffin" will begin at 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday at Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave., Everett.

Individual tickets are $15; package rates are available. Call 425-257-8600 or online at www.villagetheatre.org.

"Celtic Yuletide": Add a bit of Celtic magic to your Christmas. Actually, make that more than a bit.

The Celtic family ensemble, Magical Strings, its 33rd annual Celtic Yuletide concert to Mount Vernon's Lincoln Theatre on Sunday.

The performance combines Celtic-flavored holiday music, with singing, dancing, juggling, caroling and storytelling. The "Celtic Yuletide" concerts are staged annually by three generations of the Boulding family and friends.

The concerts are "grand gala events," with music that features Celtic harps, hammered dulcimers, violins, cello, whistles and concertina. Magical Strings will be joined by the Raney Irish Dancers and the Tara Academy of Irish Dance, vocalist Colleen Raney and Irish fiddler Dale Russ, according to press material.

At one point during the concert, audience members are invited to put on costumes and follow the processional through the aisles with the musicians, and join in the caroling. The hall resounds in harmony as the concert closes with a round of "All Through the Night."

Philip and Pam Boulding founded Magical Strings in 1978, the same year that they began the tradition of "Celtic Yuletide" concerts with their family. They have performed throughout the United States, Canada, Ireland and Japan, toured and recorded with Dan Fogelberg, appeared on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion," and recorded 18 albums on four labels, according to their biography.

"Celtic Yuletide" performs at 3 p.m. Sunday at Lincoln Theatre, 712 S First St., Mount Vernon.

Reserved seating is $15 to $22. Call 360-419-7129 or go to ilovethelincoln.com.
