TALKING POINTS
The Everett Silvertips are all about flashes.
Once again, the Tips gave a flash of what they’re capable of doing when they put in the effort. In the third period Everett dominated play, outshooting Spokane 17-5 and outscoring the Chiefs 1-0. But a lackluster first 40 minutes — particularly the second period, when Spokane outshot the Tips 15-2 — left Everett in too deep a hole.
And that’s been the standard pattern for the Tips. It’s 40 games into the season and I’m not sure I’ve seen Everett put together a complete 60 minutes yet.
Everett defenseman Dominik Bittner was boarded by Collin Valcourt during the second period and was shaken up. Bittner left the ice under his own power, but did not return. His status is still to be determined.
So the Tips came up empty in this difficult three-game weekend, when they faced the top three teams in the U.S. Division. These were the last games before Tuesday’s trade deadline, and Everett has the worst record in the league. It’ll be interesting to see how these next two days shake out.
TURNING POINT
Spokane scored twice within 1:08 of Everett taking a 2-1 lead midway through the first period to restore its lead. But the true decisive moment came in the second period. The Chiefs led 3-2 when Everett was awarded a four-minute power play. However, the Chiefs managed to hold the Tips without a single shot on goal during the entire four minutes, and toward the end of the advantage Spokane’s Blake Gal converted a short-handed breakaway for the back-breaking goal.
HIT OF THE DAY
Midway through the third period Everett’s Nick Walters put a good lickin’ on a player. Unfortunately, it was his own teammate, Jari Erricson.
THREE STARS
First star: Mitch Holmberg, Spokane. One goal and one assist, a no-nonsense performance.
Second star: Murray. One goal, he brings a different element to the Tips.
Third star: Dominik Uher, Spokane. Two assists, was a danger because of his skating.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Kohl Bauml/Trent Lofthouse, Everett. Everett’s other goal scorers put in good efforts, along with Murray.
