King’s legacy

Lynnwood: Former Obama administration official Van Jones will be the keynote speaker at a free Martin Luther King Jr. community celebration at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lynnwood Convention Center, 3711 196th St. SW. Jones’ topic is “Rebuild the Dream: The Next American Economy.” The Total Experience Gospel Choir will perform. Refreshments at 6:30 p.m. American Sign Language and Spanish interpreters available. Event hosted by the city of Lynnwood, Edmonds Community College, Edmonds School District and YMCA of Snohomish County.

Everett senior center: The public is invited to a free Diversity Partnering Reception honoring winners of the Prodigies for Peace essay and art contest from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Carl Gipson Senior Center, 3025 Lombard Ave. Those wanting to attend are asked to call 425-257-8751; RSVP required. Table sponsors include Northshore Christian Academy and Everett Community College Outreach, Diversity &Equity Center.

Everett church: A Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, with a performance by the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Choir, is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at Everett’s Spirit of Grace United Methodist Church, 3530 Colby Ave. Toyia Taylor will speak at the event supported by the Snohomish County Black Heritage Committee.

Whidbey church: A Whidbey Island community Martin Luther King Jr. “Blessed Be the Peace Makers” event will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Augustine’s-in-the-Woods Episcopal Church, 5217 Honeymoon Bay Road, Freeland. Free refreshments served an hour before the event in the parish hall. Speaking will be Ora Houston, a leader in the Union of Black Episcopalians. There will be a free-will offering for Helping Hand; food donations also accepted.

Everett Community College: Speaker Barry Scott will present a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Jan. 18 in Baker Hall, room 120, on the Everett Community College campus, 2000 Tower St. The event is free and open to the public. Scott will speak about the civil rights movement and perform portions of King speeches. A question-and-answer session will follow the talk.
