SNOHOMISH — Despite some success by Stanwood in the lower weight classes and a close match at 160 pounds, Snohomish managed a convincing 46-21 win on Senior Night over an up-and-coming Spartan wrestling team.
“We knew they were going to be tough, we knew they were going to be physical,” said Snohomish head coach Rob Zabel. “We tried to practice for what we anticipated they were going to do … we were pretty fortunate to get a couple of those wins.”
Zabel said that Tristan Baus and Mario Rojas particularily stepped up and wrestled good matches and that Luke Reinhard had a couple of really nice throws.
One match that almost went the the other way was the bout at 160 between Ammon Morrill of Snohomish and Kyle Bennett of Stanwood. Morrill went on to win by a 4-1 decision. “Ammon did well with positioning. There were some good scrambles and battles, and (Bennett) just couldn’t get out from underneath him,” said Spartans head coach Ray Mather. “Bennett had him turned on his back. Ammon fought hard, determined not to go over. He got a reversal and ended up winning the match against us.”
As to the overall match, Mather said it went about how he expected. “We thought we would make some upsets … but they don’t really have any holes. It was going to be a long shot. We fired all our barrells, it just wasn’t enough.”
