Front Porch: Workshop for the college bound

Everett Community College is hosting a free evening of workshops for elementary, middle and high school students and their families at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday in EvCC's Student Fitness Center, 2206 Tower St.

Families with students of all ages may attend Family Night to learn about the benefits of obtaining a college education, ways to pay for college, earning college credit in high school, strengthening study skills and university transfer options.

Families can attend special sessions for elementary, middle school and high school students.

Attendees will receive free parking and a light dinner.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary Edmonds Flotilla will teach two boating classes for experienced and novice boaters.

The first, Weekend Navigator, is an 11-week course on getting the most out of electronics and navigating in Puget Sound and off shore. This course starts Tuesday.

The second, Boating Skills and Seamanship, is a study of all aspects of boating. This 12-week course starts Thursday.

Want to see Lake Stevens students in action? Superintendent Amy Beth Cook is leading parents on a tour of an elementary school and a secondary school Wednesday.

The superintendent will be talking about the district's progress. The tour begins at 9 a.m. at the Educational Service Center, 12309 22nd St. NE, Lake Stevens.

The event starts with a continental breakfast with the superintendent and ends with a school lunch. The district asks people to call ahead to make arrangements.
