Wrestling: Stanwood girls make strong showing

TACOMA — For the uninitiated, stepping on the floor of the Tacoma Dome at Mat Classic XXIV can be a humbling experience. With up to 24 mats of simultaneous action at any given moment, it’s a tournament unlike nearly any other in wrestling.

For Stanwood’s Laura Charboneau it was no big deal.

The Stanwood senior, who wrestles at 265 pounds, has already placed in the top five at state twice. On Friday, she wrestled like a seasoned veteran, pinning her first two opponents to skate into today’s semifinal, which for her should take place around 11:50 a.m.

“Coming to the T-dome is a whole different experience than some of the other tournaments,” Charboneau said. “To not be nervous about being at the T dome is a lot more comforting to me. To know that I’m not scared of my environment. … I know what I’m getting into.”

Charboneau, who boosted her season record to 23-0, has been scored on just twice this year, Stanwood girls coach Bruce VanScoy said. Thanks to first-round wins by Charboneau, Casey Mather (112 pounds), Savannah Phillips (106), and Ruthie Karlberg (137) the Spartans shot up to second in the team point standings midway through Friday’s action.

“The expectations are always higher than what we get,” VanScoy said, “but overall we are pretty satisfied with how we are doing.”

Mather, the cousin of Stanwood boys coach Ray Mather, also picked up two wins to advance to the semifinals and guarantee herself at least a top-six individual finish. Phillips dropped a quarterfinal match, but clinched a top-eight finish — and a state-placer’s medal — by winning her first consolation bout. She can finish as high as third.

The Spartan girls finished the first day of competition tied for seventh in the team standings with 30.5 points, but were just 7.5 points behind first-place Mount Baker.

“We’ll be back up there,” VanScoy said.

For the Stanwood boys, junior Zach Schut has been an inspirational leader and team captain all season. Entering the meet, Schutt was ranked ninth in the state in Class 4A at 152 pounds by the Washington Wrestling Report, so his trip to the semifinals was a surprise to many outsiders.

“You can never count him out,” Ray Mather said. “Guys make mistakes and he’ll make them pay for them.”

That is exactly what happened in both of Schutt’s bouts. He twice fell behind in points and each time came back to pin his opponent in the final minute. In the quarterfinals, he trailed fifth-ranked Tilda Sansom of Auburn 2-1 and took advantage of a mistake to put Sansom on his back.

In the boys team competition, Lake Stevens and Snohomish were the local leaders — as expected. Lake Stevens was in fifth place at the end of the first day and Snohomish was sixth. Lake Stevens’ reign as the Class 4A state champion appears to be over, however. The Vikings are 51 points behind Tahoma (92 points). Tourney favorite Mead was second with 78.5.

The Vikings had the most semifinalists of any local team, with third-ranked Eric Soler (126 pounds) advancing to take on second-ranked Ares Carpio of Todd Beamer in a semifinal match at 10:20 this morning. Ryan Olliges barely escaped Shelton’s Johnathan Dennis in the quarterfinals, winning a 5-3 decision to advance to the semifinals, where he faces defending 182-pound state champ Jordan Rogers of Mead.

At heavyweight, Lake Stevens’ Brandon Johnson was impressive, pinning his first two opponents in 38 seconds and 2:38 to advance to the semifinals. Johnson reached the Tacoma Dome as an alternate as a freshman and returned to the dome this past fall as a member of the Lake Stevens football team that lost in the Class 4A state semifinals.

“Hopefully we’ll just make up for football here in wrestling,” Johnson said with a smile.

Snohomish’s Ammon Morrill was business-like in winning his first two matches of the tournament to move into a 160-pound semifinal. Morrill made both opponents look overmatched.

“I just prepare like its going to be the hardest match ever and I just go out and wrestle like it,” the Panther senior said. “I do fine because I wrestle so hard.”

Snohomish started strong, going 5-2 in the opening round, but only Morrill and 195-pounder Nathan Proffit advanced to the semifinals.

Proffit has a chance for a rematch of the Northwest District final he lost 9-6 to Arlington’s Blake McPherson. If both win their 11:10 a.m. semifinal bouts today, they will meet in the finals. McPherson, who hasn’t lost all season and looked impressive with a pin and a 12-5 decision Friday, may have the toughest test in top-ranked Kadyn DelToro of Curtis.

“They all are pretty tough,” McPherson said of his postseason opponents, “But tomorrow’s going to be the hardest. … (DelToro) is really strong.”

Also reaching the Class 4A semifinals was Edmonds-Woodway sophomore Noah Cuzzetto at 106 pounds.

On the 3A side, Glacier Peak’s Jacob and Sean Elledge advanced to the semifinals and the Grizzlies finished the first day in 14th place with 25 points, well behind first-place Yelm (62). Everett’s Jessie Lopez advanced to the semifinals at 132 pounds, but teammate Connor Boyce, ranked No. 1 in 3A at 170 pounds, was upset in the quarterfinals, losing to Rowland Gaydosh of Decauter 9-8.

Other area girls who advanced to today’s semifinals included Justine Palabrica of Everett (100 pounds) and Jennifer Fremd of Oak Harbor (145).
