4A BOYS STATE: Games preview

JACKSON (19-5) vs. Union (17-8)

Thursday, 7:15 p.m. at Tacoma Dome

Aside from having three players who can score on offense — BYU recruit Jordan Chatman, Tanner Nelson and Tyler Copp — Union also switches its look on defense transforming between a pressing defense as well as a trap. The Titans, who won the 3A state championship last year before moving up to 4A this season, have an 11-12 man rotation.

“They’re pretty athletic,” Jackson head coach Steven Johnson said. “They’re a strong team.”

Johnson thinks that “size-wise” the Timberwolves matchup pretty well with Union, but stresses his team is going to need to handle the defensive pressure and different looks if it’s going to be successful against the Titans.

“There’s a lot to get ready for,” Johnson said.

BOTHELL (17-9) vs. A.C. DAVIS (20-2)

Thursday, 3:45 p.m. at Tacoma Dome

Davis has been ranked No.1 in the state for much of the season, while Bothell perhaps boast the best player in the state in Zach LaVine. Davis is the favorite in this game led by David Trimble, but the game could get very interesting if LaVine and his sidekick Perrion Callandret are able to score against the Pirates defense. If the Pirates are able to slow down LaVine and Callandret though, it could by a very long day for the Cougars.

MOUNT RAINIER (18-10) vs. BELLARMINE PREP (23-3)

Thursday, 5:30 p.m. at Tacoma Dome

Bellarmine has also spent some time at No.1 this season as well, but a couple of late season losses lowered the Lions ranking. Balance is the story for the Lions, who have four players who average in double figures scoring. Mount Rainier enters the tournament led by sophomore Adrian Davis. The Rams are the only 10-loss team in the field and entered the regional round coming off of back-to-back losses to Olympia and Bellarmine Prep. It doesnt bode well for the Rams that they drew the Lions in the first round at state.

CENTRAL VALLEY (20-3) vs. GARFIELD (19-5)

Thursday, 9 p.m. at Tacoma Dome

Central Valley comes into the game riding a 17-game winning streak. But it has probably been a while since the Bears have seen a scorer like Tucker Haymond, who averages nearly 22 points per game. The two schools from opposite ends of the state probably dont know much about each other, other than what they have seen on film, which could make for an interesting game. Garfield will need Haymond and TreVaunte Williams, who averages nearly 16 points a game, to score offensively to give the Bulldogs a chance.
