Shorecrest can't handle Cleveland's pressure

TACOMA -- In 2010, it was the Cleveland girls basketball team which ended the Shorecrest Scots dreams of a state championship.

Unfortunately for the Scots, 2012 brought the same storyline. Cleveland came from behind in the second half to defeat Shorecrest 39-32 in the Class 3A state quarterfinals on Thursday.

It was a tale of two halves. The Scots led 17-13 after the first two quarters thanks in large part to Cleveland shooting 5-for-28 in the first half.

But trailing by just four points, the Eagles were right within striking distance.

In the second half, Cleveland started pressuring the Scots in the backcourt and forcing turnovers. On offense, the Eagles took care of the ball. The Scots turned the ball over 13 times in the second half, while Cleveland coughed it up just four times.

To top all that off, the Scots shot just 4-for-16 in the final two quarters.

The Eagles were balanced offensively. Eight of the 10 players that played scored. Makayla Roper led the way with eight points, Donniesha Webber added seven, including some clutch free throws in the final seconds to help Cleveland secure its victory.

That same offensive balance didn't exist for Shorecrest. Just five players scored for Shorecrest and only three of them had more than two points. Onyie Chibuogwu led the way with 13 points. Brianne Lasconia scored nine points, but was largely held in check by the Eagles defense, which held her to just 2-for-11 from the field.

Cleveland faces Franklin at 7:15 p.m. today in the semifinals. Shorecrest will play Kamiakin in a loser-out consolation game at 12:15 p.m.
