EvCC honors Arlington student
Everett Community College student Teresa Weldon was nominated by the college Board of Trustees for the state’s Transforming Lives Award, which recognizes students or graduates who have turned their lives around by pursuing higher education at a community or technical college.
Weldon, of Arlington, was one of 35 nominees recognized at a special ceremony Jan. 22 by the state Trustees Association of Community and Technical Colleges, which chose five winners.
Weldon, a single mom with a history of drug use, started attending Everett Community College in 2009 through the WorkFirst Program with the desire to make a better life for her daughter and to show her child the importance of education.
Two decades after graduating from high school, Weldon earned a 3.33 grade point average her first quarter in college. She gained confidence by serving on the Everett Community College Associated Student Body Senate and the ASB Executive Council, where she served one year as vice president of clubs and is currently serving as vice president of administration.
Weldon graduated from Everett in June 2011 with an associate degree in technical arts degree in business technology and seven certificates in various administrative fields. She is now pursuing a transfer degree at the community college and plans to attend Western Washington University’s human services program.
Weldon received the Everett’s Distinguished Student Service award in 2010, is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and serves as a youth mentor through EvCC’s Mentor Project.
Everett Zonta Club honors six women
In honor of International Women’s Day the Zonta Club of Everett honored six women for their work in the community on behalf of women.
Margaret Bruland, executive director of the Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County, was honored for her years of service.
Kathy Duffy, a community volunteer was honored for her service to the community, including volunteering at Providence Hospital Gift Shop, Camp Prov and as a board member for Camp Fire USA Snohomish County Council.
Susan Mayer and Pat Lawrence from the Mill Creek Women’s club were recognized for their partnership with YWCA and their work with the “Women’s Working Wardrobe” program in Everett.
Carol Dreysse, District 8 Governor of Zonta International, was honored for her work with the organization to improve women’s lives locally and globally.
Kathy Atwood. Everett Police Chief, was recognized for her service to the community and for being a role model.
The Zonta Club of Everett is a service organization recognized for its advocacy and leadership in actively improving the status of women locally and globally.

GIVING
TOPS donates food equal to weight loss
The members of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) chapter 1090 of Bothell—South Snohomish County contributed 189 pounds of food in February to the Canyon Hills Community Church food bank.
The weight of the food they donated was equal to the total weight lost by the club in 2011.
Members of the club include Karen Ceurvost, Bill Thomas, Karen Murray, Meredith Johnson, Mike Thomas, Kathy Lis, Sue Henriksen, Dulcie Chase, Diane Cunningham, Brenda Street, Essie Stine, Bonie Rogers, Alyah Chase, Steph Della-Chiara and Gary Ceurvost.
Family donates to St. Vincent de Paul
St. Vincent de Paul, North Sound Council, has announced the donation of $1,860 from the Hubbard Family Foundation for the Beds for Children Program.
The funds are used to buy beds for children who otherwise don’t have their own beds.
All of the funds St. Vincent de Paul receives go directly to its program.
Schools foundation event raises $120K
More than 420 guests attended the March 8 benefit breakfast sponsored by the Everett Public Schools Foundation. The event raised more than $120,000.
The money goes to programs the foundation sponsors for students from kindergarten through high school graduation.
Bette Hyde, director of the state’s Early Learning program, delivered the keynote address.

Terrace team helps Nicaraguan school
Mountlake Terrace High School’s FIRST Robotics Team 1778, “Chill Out,” has collected school supplies to send Villa Esperanza, a rescue home and school for homeless girls in Managua, Nicaragua.
Team 1778 actively encourages education in local communities, but decided to help other countries as well. During the six weeks that they were building a robot, the team gathered, with the help of Staples, about $500 worth of school supplies to send to Nicaragua.
Auction helps Domestic Violence Services
Soroptimist International of Everett recently held its third annual Grab A Grape wine auction fundraiser for Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County.
The event raised more than $5,000, which will be used to assist the agency in completing its new facility, scheduled to open in 2013.
