Up close with David Bazan in a Seattle living room

Last Wednesday night, Seattle Living Room Shows hosted David Bazan’s living room tour and I was lucky enough to attend. I have never been to a show in someone’s living room before and wasn’t really sure what to expect. It was a pretty amazing and personal show experience.

When they say the show starts at 8, they aren’t kidding. At 8 p.m., Bazan was introduced and the 60 strangers huddled in the living room went silent while he opened the show with “Wolves at The Door,” the first track from his most recent record Strange Negotiations.

After a few songs Bazan asked the crowd if anybody had any questions they would like to ask. He did this several times throughout the night and questions ranged from “what’s your favorite burger?” to “what happens when we die?” He answered all of them as seriously and honestly as he could.

One member of the audience asked “have you had any weird house show experiences.”

“No” Bazan said. “I know it’s hard to believe but I have done about 300 of these and they are all great. Y’all behave better in someone’s house than you do in a club.”

This show was great for me because I am a fan of David Bazan’s music so this show was pretty special for me, but I can’t help but think that any show in a setting like this would feel special. You park on a residential street and look for the right house, walk in and give your name to the host/homeowner, take your coat to the coatroom/bedroom, crack open a beer or bottle of wine you brought with you and then take your seat in a chair or on the floor. It doesn’t really matter who you are seeing perform, if you love live music this is about as good as it gets.
