Everett council approves synthetic grass replacement at Kasch Park

EVERETT -- One soccer field is getting a makeover.
On Wednesday night, the Everett City Council unanimously approved replacing the synthetic grass on a soccer field at Kasch Park, 8811 Airport Road.
The $1 million contract was awarded to Premier Development, of New Jersey. Work is set to begin in mid-May and the field should be ready by Labor Day, Parks and Recreation Department director Paul Kaftanski said.
"The folks who play and even watch in the sidelines will see a dramatic difference when this field opens up," Kaftanski said.
Besides changing the synthetic turf, crews are set to install a special kind of foam padding to rise the field a half- inch. This should fix drainage problems that were damaging the turf, Kaftanski said.
Crews also will replace the cinder trail around the field with the synthetic material. The new synthetic field is expected to last 15 years.
The work was set for next month because that is when the soccer fields are in less demand, Kaftanski said. The three soccer fields are generally used by several soccer leagues and are open for recreational use as well.
If there's a need, games can be moved to other fields at Walter E. Hall Park, 1226 SW Casino Road.
Kasch Park offers three soccer fields, a softball and baseball field.
There are plans to replace the turf for other two soccer fields in coming years, Kaftanski said.
