Theft case begins against son of lieutenant governor

The son of Washington Lt. Gov. Brad Owen was due in a Thurston County courtroom today to face charges of theft and forgery stemming from his allegedly improper receipt of nearly $20,000 in disability payments in 2009 and 2010.

Attorney General Rob McKenna filed four counts of theft and one count of forgery against Owen, 39, following a lengthy probe by an investigator for the state Department of Labor and Industries.

Each of the theft charges carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail and/or a $20,000 fine plus restitution, according to documents filed with the court. The forgery charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in jail and/or a $10,000 fine.

Copies of the allegations provided by McKenna's office are attached to this post.
