The Boeing Co. marked another milestone with its Next-Generation 737 program on Friday.
The aerospace giant celebrated its 4,000 737 NG jet at an event at Boeing Field. This 737 will be delivered to China Southern Airlines next week.
“The Next-Generation 737’s success is the result of years of expertise that thousands of employees continue to build into every Boeing 737 used in private, government and commercial service,” Beverly Wyse, general manager of the 737 program, said in a statement.
Through the end of March, Boeing had delivered more than 7,100 737s, including the original version of the single-aisle jet and the Next-Generation aircraft which was introduced in the 1990s. The 737 NG family has won more than 6,600 orders and has a backlog of 2,600 airplanes.
This will be the 75th 737 delivered directly to China Southern. The carrier has 45 more 737s on order.
Boeing plans to introduce its latest iteration of the Renton-built aircraft, the 737 MAX, by 2017. The company says its re-engined MAX will offer significant fuel savings over both the 737 NG and the A320neo, an upgraded version of Airbus’ competing single-aisle jet.
Boeing unveiled more 737 MAX details earlier this week. The company has received more than 1,000 commitments from customers for the MAX.
