Kamiak student raises money for Ghana
Joel Bervell, 16, a student at Kamiak High School, is one of 80 young leaders honored for his volunteer work by the Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Heroes program.
A spokeswoman for the organization said the national community service recognition program searches the country for young people doing good things, and more than 1,000 students were considered for the award. Joel is in the running to win $10,000 in the form of a scholarship and a donation to his volunteer service.
Joel co-founded Hugs for Ghana, a student-led organization assisting children in Ghana. He has coordinated collection drives and traveled to Ghana to deliver the items to children in hospitals, schools and orphanages. Joel’s parents were born in Ghana amd moved to the United States. During a trip to Africa, Joel recognized the need for supplies. He has since raised more than $7,000 through donation drives, delivered more than 6,000 school supplies, $2,000 worth of medical supplies, and more than 5,000 teddy bears.
