The campaign is on for the state Senate seat from the 1st Legislative District.

Incumbent Democratic state Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe has announced a campaign kickoff event Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hollywood Schoolhouse, 14810 NE 145th, Woodinville.

McAuliffe, chairwoman of the Senate committee on education, will seek a sixth four-year term in the Senate.

She’ll have to raise a lot of money to match her only announced opponent, independent candidate Guy Palumbo, a member of the Snohomish County Planning Commission and owner of an animal boarding business.

Palumbo has reported raising $52,217, compared to $4,350 for McAuliffe, who was barred from fundraising during the legislative session.

The 1st Legislative District includes Brier, most of Mountlake Terrace, Bothell, part of Kirkland, unincorporated areas of Snohomish County north and east of Bothell and unincorporated areas of King County between Bothell and Kirkland.

The only Republican who had registered for the seat with the state Public Disclosure Commission, Brian Travis, has withdrawn, announced his support for Palumbo and registered his intent to challenge Democratic state Rep. Derek Stanford.
