Volunteers plant a garden for food bank
Volunteers from St. Mary Magdalen parish, including Mary DeBroeck, Maria Horning, Debbie Kawamoto and Ron Osborn, along with Catholic Daughters St. Rita Court members Charlene Osborn, Dolores Geary and Mary Krajewski, and Boy Scout Troup 18 worked together to build and plant a garden for the St. Vincent DePaul food bank at St. Mary Magdalen parish in southeast Everett.
Food bank volunteers plan to give fresh vegetables to about 35 families a week throughout the summer.
Volunteers provide flowers for Monroe
Businesses, organizations and individuals have stepped forward this spring to provide flowers for traffic islands, downtown planter pots and hanging baskets along Main Street and Lewis Street in the heart of Monroe.
The donations and volunteer labor is worth more than $4,000, Monroe city officials said. Budget cuts had halted the city parks department's ability to buy the annual flowers.
Those involved in the flower project include the Monroe Garden Club, Republic Services, Pine Creek Nursery, Lowes, Walmart and the Monroe Correctional Complex inmate work crew.
Soroptimists give out awards, grants
Soroptimist International of Sno-King, a volunteer service organization of professional women, presented awards at its fourth annual Celebration of Women fashion show and brunch April 21.
Hanah Joudi, a Mountlake Terrace High School student, is the winner of the Violet Richardson Award, which recognizes teens who volunteer to make the world a better place. Hanah volunteers with Teen Feed, a nonprofit organization that helps homeless youth get off the streets by providing hot meals, clothing and toiletries, along with help finding jobs and low-income housing. The service club also gave Teen Feed a cash award in support of its mission.
Melanie Hartman is the winner of the Women's Opportunity Award, which since 1972 has helped single women enter the workforce or upgrade their employment status. Hartman is in the teacher preparation program at City University of Seattle. She is studying to become a special education teacher.
The Ruby Award acknowledges women who are working to improve the lives of women and girls through their personal or professional activities. Their efforts help to promote the issues that are important to the Soroptimist organization.
Krista Haugen won the Ruby Award. Haugen, a former flight nurse with Airlift Northwest and a helicopter crash survivor, created the Survivors Network for Air and Surface Medical Transport. She is raising money for an Air Medical Memorial and Survivors Garden. She accepted the Ruby Award in memory of Erin Reed and Lois Suzuki, two flight nurses killed in a crash in Edmonds.
Other monetary awards went to Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County, which provides emergency shelter and services to victims of domestic abuse; Little Red Schoolhouse, which helps children with developmental disabilities or delays; Next Steps Pregnancy Center, which offers baby supplies and clothing; Not for Sale Washington, which educates people about human trafficking rings; Children's Country Home; and Gilda's Club Seattle, which offers support for cancer survivors.

Lake Stevens Fire Department members recognized two of their own at a ceremony in April. Capt. Tom Withrow received his 20-year achievement certificate and Oath of Commitment and Capt. Ryan Lowe received his Oath of Commitment.
The Oath of Commitment pledges a commitment to the department's mission and honors a pledge to motivate and direct one's crew to do the same, department officials said.
Withrow and Lowe began their careers as volunteers with the fire department.
