MONROE — People are invited to watch a Snohomish County firefighter aim to beat a world record next week.
Fire District 1 firefighter Tony Robinson, 44, of Monroe, is a lifelong runner.
About seven years ago, he started doing one-mile runs in full firefighting gear, he said.
“I run a lot, and you’re always looking for the latest challenge to keep things interesting,” he said.
A family friend connected him with Camp Eyabsut, a North Bend-area camp for children who have suffered serious burns, said Robinson’s wife, Cheryl.
“He said, ‘What could be better than to raise money for kids who have been burn victims?’” she said.
On Wednesday, Robinson will attempt to beat the Guinness World Record for the mile run in firefighting gear.
He usually does his gear run during a children’s race, and the kids get a kick out of it, he said.
Often, his sons Gabe, 9, and Jonathan, 12, run alongside him to support him.
Robinson typically works at Fire Station 16 in the Edmonds area.
People can donate to the camp via the website, www.saveburncamp.org, or during Robinson’s run, which is planned as part of the Club Northwest Summer All-Comers Track &Field Series.
The run is set for about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Shoreline Stadium at 18560 First Ave NE. There is a small fee to attend.
