WENATCHEE -- A 13-year-old girl is missing and presumed drowned in the Columbia River at Wenatchee.

Police Captain Kevin Dresker says the girl and a 13-year-old friend jumped into the water Monday afternoon and floated several hundred yards downstream before a bystander noticed they were in distress.

Dresker told KPQ radio the witness was able to save one girl but the other wasn't visible when they returned to shore. Emergency searchers and divers were unable to locate her.

Police say the water is moving at 9 miles per hour with a temperature of 50 degrees.
