5th Avenue honors county high school productions

SEATTLE — It’s like the state tournament for theater kids. It’s even a bit like Broadway’s Tony awards.

The 5th Avenue Theatre has announced the nominees for the 2012 awards honoring high school musical theater. Winners pick up their awards at a celebration June 4 at the Seattle theater.

The Snohomish County high schools nominated for awards include Arlington, Edmonds Heights, Glacier Peak, Kamiak, Lake Stevens, Marysville Pilchuck, Mountlake Terrace, Snohomish, Stanwood and Sultan.

Sultan, one of the most rural of the schools nominated from throughout the state, garnered a nomination for outstanding scenic design and an honorable mention for outstanding costume design for its production of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.”

Glacier Peak collected 11 nominations and two honorable mentions for its production of “Seussical.”

The musical production is nominated for outstanding overall musical, outstanding direction, outstanding choreography, outstanding scenic, lighting and costume design and outstanding performance by a chorus. Andrew Moe as Horton and Dana Brager as JoJo are nominated for outstanding performance in leading roles. Honorable mention performances went to Deborah Hussey as the Cat in the Hat and Erin Wygant as Gertrude McFuzz.

Arlington’s production of “Beauty and the Beast” earned nominations for Mario Mirante as Monsieur D’Arque for his outstanding performance in an ensemble role and for Justin O’Hara as Gaston for his outstanding performance in a supporting role.

Edmonds Heights, a K-12 alternative school, was nominated for its productions of “Xanadu” and “Allegro,” with nods for student achievement for Kenn Grambihler, outstanding performance by an ensemble group, outstanding costume design, outstanding performance in a supporting role by Deanna Smith as Emily in “Allegro,” outstanding music direction for “Allegro” and an honorable mention for outstanding direction in “Xanadu.”

Kamiak was recognized for its “Beauty and the Beast” production. It got nominations for student achievement for Emily Russell, outstanding costume design and outstanding music direction.

Lake Stevens collected performance nominations in leading roles for Audrey Fletcher and Mandy Henrichsen as Velma and Roxie in “Chicago.” The production also was nominated for outstanding lobby display and lighting design.

Marysville Pilchuck was nominated for its outstanding scenic design for “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

Mountlake Terrace produced “Pump Boys and Dinettes” and earned nominations for outstanding performance by an ensemble cast and for Calvin Martin as LM and Karin Redden at Rhetta Cupp in their outstanding performances in supporting roles.

Snohomish High produced “My Fair Lady,” with an honorable mention for its orchestra.

Stanwood won nominations for Kelly O’Heren as Vince Fountaine for his outstanding performance in a non-singing role in “Grease,” for the Pink Ladies and Burger Palace Boys for outstanding ensemble group performance and outstanding choreography and music direction.
