GOLD BAR -- Snohomish County thought it could lend a hand to this small Sky Valley community by helping to fill a long-open vacancy on the City Council.

Turns out, it's been a difficult task.

A month has passed since the county began advertising for the appointment. An application deadline passed on Friday with no takers. In light of that, the county intends to continue accepting applications through June.

"We had not received any applicants," Marcia Isenberg, the County Council's chief of staff, said Wednesday. "We still have until June 30 to find somebody, but at this point, we haven't received any interest."

One person did inquire about the job, but he lived just outside city limits of this town of about 2,000 inhabitants.

The vacancy on the five-member Gold Bar City Council arose after Councilman Charles Lie's Jan. 2 resignation. The position pays $100 per month.

The successful candidate gets to serve out the remainder of Lie's term, which expires in 2013.

Under state law, the city had 90 days to fill his position. After that, the county has until 180 days after the day of the vacancy to fill the job. If the county's time passes without success, Gold Bar can ask Gov. Chris Gregoire's office to get involved.

To be eligible, a person must be a registered voter who has lived within Gold Bar city limits for at least one year.

The city and county earlier tried to lure applications through posted notices, newspaper and web ads.
