Vote for the top student-athlete of 2012 (GIRLS)

It’s tough to say goodbye.

For a number of local athletes this year was the final one in their high school career. Their swan song. Their coda. So we decided to celebrate the best of the best. Using recommendations from athletic directors and Herald writers we picked a senior boy and girl athlete from each local school to represent the Class of 2012. These aren’t just the best athletes, but also great teammates, strong students and likely to help out in the community.

We’re also having a fun competition. Go here and vote for your five favorite athletes of 2012. Then we’ll take the top five — throw in an extra Herald selection — and pick our boy and girls student-athletes of 2012. This is strictly for fun and to spark a little school pride so share this poll on Facebook and Twitter.

MAREA HOMES

Archbishop Murphy

Homes lettered in volleyball and softball all four years and was named to the volleyball All-Cascade second team as a senior. She has a 3.86 GPA and volunteers for many projects through her church and Archbishop Murphy.

LEXI SARVER

Arlington

Sarver has been a three-sport athlete every year of her high-school career except this season, taking basketball off to focus her efforts on track. She typically played volleyball, basketball and track, but gave cross country a shot over volleyball in her sophomore year. Sarver, a 3.9 student, is headed to Northwest Nazarene in Boise after graduation. She has already received a $10,000 academic scholarship and an undisclosed athletic scholarship and her accomplishments are all the more impressive given the fact that she battled cancer for the first six years of her life.

KIANA HOOD

Cascade

Hood is a three-sport athlete for the Bruins, playing volleyball and basketball and running track. She was named to the All-Wesco South second team this past season in basketball and helped the 800-meter relay team finish 10th at last week’s 4A state championships.

GWEN BIECK

Cedarcrest

Bieck scored 13 goals and had four assists to lead Cedarcrest to the 2A state championship game and earn herself the Team MVP Award, Team Most Inspirational Award and the Washington 2A State Championship Sportsmanship Award. Bieck, who holds a 3.13 GPA, was named a 2A All-State honorable mention and All-Cascade first team selection as a midfielder. She earned a scholarship to play for Oregon State in the fall.

GRACE LAPOINT

Coupeville

LaPoint was the goalkeeper on the Wolves girls soccer team and also participated on the track and field team in the 200, 400 and javelin.

JESSICA BROOKS

Darrington

Brooks lettered in volleyball and basketball this year and is a three-year letterer in softball — she missed her senior year due to a torn ACL. In volleyball, Brooks was named all-league first team and MVP as a senior and was a key contributor to the Loggers placing third in state — the highest placement in school history. Brooks was all-league first team as a basketball player. She carries a GPA of 3.5 and is planning to attend Northwest College in Powell, Wyo., next fall to become a horse trainer.

MADELINE KASPER

Edmonds-Woodway

Kasper has been a standout on the girls basketball team for four seasons. In her career at Edmonds-Woodway she has been a prototypical point guard and a scorer for the Warriors. She was named to the All-Wesco first team and All-Area second team. Perhaps even more impressive, according to her coach Duane Hodges, Kasper has over 100 victories as a starter for Edmonds-Woodway.

JODY BARHANOVICH

Everett

Barhanovich participated on Everett’s volleyball, basketball and golf teams, becoming a four-year letter winner in each sport. As a two-year captain on the basketball team, she helped the Seagulls improve from 3-17 her freshman year to 12-8 during the most recent season. Last week Barhanovich finished second at the 3A District Golf Championships to return to state, where she finished 19th.

LOUISA PENDERGAST

Glacier Peak

A member of the All-Wesco 3A second team, Pendergast helped lead the Glacier Peak girls soccer team to the quarterfinals of the 2009 state tournament and the first round of the 2010 tourney. She has a 3.9 GPA and will play soccer for Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

BREANNA WHITE

Granite Falls

White has participated in three sports in her career at Granite Falls, including letters in volleyball (2), basketball (2) and tennis (4). She’s described as a good student and teammate and is headed to Everett Community College with plans to play volleyball and basketball.

MEGAN COOLEY

Jackson

Cooley is a standout on the Jackson softball team, a perennial power in the Wesco South, and was named to the All-Wesco first team as a utility player. She is also a member of the girls soccer team at Jackson and was named All-Wesco South first team this past season. She will be attending Boston College next season on a softball scholarship.

BRYCE LARSON

Kamiak

Larson has been a key member of the Kamiak volleyball team for four years and was named to the All-Area first team and All-Wesco first team as a hitter. She led the Knights to a second-place finish at districts and a spot in the state tournament. She is on her way to Western Washington University after graduation.

KARLIE STORKSON

King’s

Storkson lettered all four years in track and basketball and was a team captain for both sports. She was all-conference the past three years, including first team this year in basketball. In track, she went to state in four events, taking first in the 100, 200 and 400. She has been given the Knight Award by her teammates and has taken part in a number of community service programs and team building activities, all while being strong in the classroom.

ABBY MOLSTRE

Lake Stevens

Molstre was a captain on both the volleyball and basketball teams this year. She is a 4.0 student and was voted by the Snohomish County Womens Basketball Officials Association as their Player of the Year for her talent, solid play, great work ethic and sportsmanship. A post player at 5-foot-7, Molstre would go up against girls that were 5-to-6 inches taller than her, but head coach Randall Edens said despite being undersized, Molstre was at times the Vikings’ MVP.

KAYLEE DIGGS

Lakewood

Diggs earned her 12th varsity letter as a member of the girls golf team this season, becoming just the third girl from Lakewood to do so. She played important roles on this year’s volleyball, basketball and golf teams, including qualifying for the state golf tournament. She’s also one of two student representatives to the school board, works nights and weekends at the Arlington Boys and Girls Club and qualified and attended the State Future Business Leaders of America Conference. She will attend the University of Washington next year.

JENNIFER TSUJI

Lynnwood

The Lynnwood setter was named to the All-Wesco first team as well as the all-state team after leading the Royals to the cusp of the state tournament. She also competes on the Royals track and field team, participating in the long jump as well as relays and the 200. Tsuji is seventh in her graduating class with a 3.97 GPA.

BRIJONNAY MADRIGAL

Mariner

Madrigal is involved in track and volleyball for the Marauders. She is also co-ASB president along with KeiVarae Russell and is involved in school activities, including the Ocean Research College Academy. She wants to pursue marine biology after graduation.

JESSICA BOYLE

Marysville Pilchuck

Boyle was a three-sport athlete her senior season, participating in volleyball, basketball and track. She was named to the All-Wesco second team in volleyball and helped the MP 1,600 relay team finish fifth at last week’s state meet. She’s planning to play volleyball and basketball at Edmonds Community College next year.

KALI BURNSIDE

Marysville Getchell

Burnside was one of the few seniors on Marysville Getchell’s first volleyball and golf teams. She boasts a 3.9 GPA and will be a part of MG’s first graduating class.

MARGREET BARHOUM

Meadowdale

A member of The Herald’s All-Area first team, Barhoum led Wesco in scoring this season with more than 21 points per game. She finished with the most points in a three-year span in Meadowdale history, and was an honorable mention on The Associated Press All-State girls 3A team. She’s going on to play basketball for the Montana State University Bobcats.

KENDAL MUNOZ

Monroe

Munoz has been a member of the Bearcats volleyball team for four years and plays club volleyball outside of school. This season, she led Monroe to the district tournament and was named All-Wesco North first team as both a hitter and a setter.

KELSEY O’NEILL

Mountlake Terrace

Aside from running on the Hawks’ cross country and track and field teams, O’Neill has earned a 3.99 GPA while at Mountlake Terrace High school. She was an Edmonds School District Scholar Athlete, chosen in a vote by the Hawks’ coaches.

MAURA McKOLE

Oak Harbor

McKole was a member of Oak Harbor’s soccer and track teams. She was part of the Wildcats’ 800-meter relay team that competed at the 3A track and field state championships last week. In the fall McKole was an honorable mention on the All-Wesco soccer team as a defender. She maintains a 3.6 GPA and will be attending Western Washington next year.

MICKEY GREENBURG

Shorecrest

Greenburg participated in the state tournament in three sports: soccer, basketball and track and field. At the 3A basketball tournament, Greenburg was one of five seniors who helped Shorecrest place in the state tournament for the first time with a close 40-37 win over Seattle Prep and claim the fourth-place trophy. In the classroom, she boasts a 3.9 GPA.

CASSIE McKINLEY

Shorewood

The Shorewood golfer finished the regular season undefeated and finished eighth in last week’s state golf tournament. Next year she plans on attending the University of Idaho on a golf scholarship. She has been a first team all-Wesco golf team selection all four years at Shorewood. McKinley also competed on the basketball, soccer and volleyball teams during her Shorewood career.

LEIRAN CORNISH

Snohomish

Cornish is a standout runner at Snohomish in both cross country and track. She is the school record holder in the 400 and a two-time Wesco North champion. Last week she participated in the 200 and 400 at the state meet, finishing second in the 400. Cornish also helped the Panthers girls cross country team to a seventh-place finish at the state meet in November.

BRITTANY WOOD

South Whidbey

Wood lettered four years in volleyball, basketball and softball for the Falcons and was all-conference second team in volleyball. She has held a 3.24 GPA and is interested in computer science and engineering. She participates in triathalons and has traveled to Mexico, Belize and Honduras.

JADE BORSETH

Stanwood

Borseth is a well-rounded three-sport athlete for the Spartans, having earned 12 letters in her career at Stanwood (cross country, basketball and golf). She helped the Spartans cross country team to a 12th place finish at the state meet this past season. She was also a member of the basketball team that competed in the state regional round and was just one victory away from competing with the top-eight teams in the state in the Tacoma Dome. In golf, she finished in the top 13 in the 4A District Championships to qualify for this week’s state tournament. She’s also a star in the classroom, having earned a 3.97 GPA, including AP and honors classes.

DANI MARKWOOD

Sultan

Markwood has lettered in volleyball, basketball and softball and has earned 11 letters. She was co-female athlete of the winter season, was named to the basketball All-Cascade first team and was named WIAA Athlete of the Week twice in her basketball career. She holds down a 3.34 cumulative GPA.
