Same-sex marriage foes claim enough signatures for referendum
It looks like voters will get the final say on whether Washington allows gay and lesbian couples to marry.
Opponents of the law are claiming to have collected enough signatures to get Referendum 74 on the November ballot. The referendum lets voters decide if they want to keep or discard the law legalizing marriage for same-sex couples.
On its website, Preserve Marriage Washington claims to have 175,437 valid signatures of registered voters. They are looking to reach 180,000 by June 6 – the day it is believed the coalition's leaders will turn in the petitions.
Under state law, the group needs 120,577 valid signatures of registered voters. Here's what happens when those petitions get turned in.
