Monroe student 2nd in math competition

Bethany Garver, a ninth-grader at Sky Valley Educational Center in Monroe, competed in the Math Kangaroo competition in March.

The event is an international competition designed for students who enjoy and excel at math.

Garver placed second in the state for her grade level and was recently honored at an awards ceremony in Kirkland.

She is the daughter of Paula and Bruce Garver of Monroe.

Kamiak alumnus graduates from UW

Blake Strickland, a 2008 graduate of Kamiak High School, recently earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington Foster School of Business.

Strickland majored in business administration with a focus in information systems and accounting and a minor in music. His undergraduate activities include the University of Washington Jazz Band, Global Brigades, a student-led global health and sustainable development organization, and Chi Psi Fraternity.

Strickland plans to work at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Seattle.

He is the son of Leslie Strickland of Everett.

Marysville Rotary awards scholarships

The Marysville Rotary on May 16 presented $45,000 in college scholarships to 36 graduating seniors from Marysville’s high schools and Lakewood High School.

Senior Louie Vital received $4,600 in scholarships. Students who received scholarships worth $3,000 were Corey Coombs, Lindsey Hartelroad, Parminderjit Kaur and Francisco Petz-Cantu.

Scholarships worth $2,000 were presented to Leticia Aparicio, Daniel Conchas and John-Divino Collado Talamayan; and $1,500 scholarships were given to Mariah Canell, Kaylee Diggs, Erik Kundu, Chelsea Rice and Zack Szechenyl.

Students who earned a $1,000 scholarship were Cherish Broker, Courtney Coombs, Omar Del La Cruz, Katherine LaRosa, You-Min Lee, Sara McCaulley, Jared Randall, Stacey Reyes, Carren Thornton, Esther Yun, Michael Zeigler and Hailey Zurcher.

Scholarships worth $500 were awarded to Kiley Brown, Celeste Bryant, Jessica Christensen, Summer Cull, Jon Ell, Savannah Fairbanks, Anthony Mack, Morgan McFalls, Lena Pasonok, Cierra Purdom and Khoi Vu.

Arlington students place at DECA conference

Arlington High School DECA competed at the International Career Development Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, from April 27 to May 2.

Approximately 15,000 high school students and advisors from all over the world competed in 50 different events and leadership academies at the conference. Arlington High School students Allison Langley, Kaylee Aune and Carley Petersen received a first place for Chapter Awards Project. Students Amanda Hayward and Coty Vandewerfhorst earned a fourth place for sports and entertainment marketing team decision making.

Rotary Club of Arlington recognizes students

The Rotary Club of Arlington recently announced and recognized its May Outstanding Students.

Students honored were given a voucher for a $50 donation to a nonprofit group at their school or a nonprofit organization in their community. Rotarian and Arlington superintendent Kris McDuffy presented certificates to Lyubov Tsymbalyuk of Arlington High School and Rachel Steichen of Lakewood Middle School.

Lyubov is a senior at Arlington High School who plans to go to Western Washington University on the College Bound Scholarship she received in the eighth grade. Rachel is an eighth-grader at Lakewood Middle School.

Lynnwood resident earns scholarship

Denna Good-Mojab of Lynnwood has been awarded the 2012-2013 Bev Sellers Memorial Scholarship for vocal performance.

She is among 17 undergraduate and graduate students awarded this scholarship by the Young Singers Foundation. Good-Mojab, 15, is finishing her sophomore year at the University of Washington School of Music. She is a student of Thomas Harper, chairman of the voice division.

In 2007, Denna debuted with the Portland Opera as the Second Spirit in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” She sang again with the opera in its 2009 production of “La Boheme” and in its 2010 productions of “Pagliacci” and “Carmina Burana.” She sang the role of Amahl in the University of Washington’s December 2011 production of “Amahl and the Night Visitors.”

In March 2012, Denna participated in Seattle Theatre Group’s training and performance program, More Music @ The Moore, singing an excerpt of the aria, “Una voce poco fa,” from Rossini’s opera “The Barber of Seville” in two concerts. She is in rehearsal for the Seattle Opera’s August 2012 production of “Turandot.”

Students earn SkillsUSA awards

The SkillsUSA Washington secondary and post-secondary skills contests were held in April at Renton Technical College and Lake Washington Institute of Technology.

Award winners include: Max Hileman, Computer Numerical Control Milling secondary gold medal, 12th grade, South Whidbey High/Sno-Isle Technical Skills Center; Sean Johnson, Computer Numerical Control Milling post-secondary gold medal; Lake Stevens, Renton Technical College; Connor Long, Computer Numerical Control Turning secondary silver medal 11th grade, Snohomish, Home School/Sno-Isle Technical Skills Center; and Tyler Moser, Precision Machining secondary silver medal, 12th grade, Snohomish High/Sno-Isle Technical Skills Center.

Hileman, Johnson and Long are to represent the state at the national SkillsUSA conference and skills contests in Kansas City, Mo., the last week of June. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.
