Walla Walla soldier killed in Afghanistan

WALLA WALLA -- The Defense Department has confirmed that a soldier from Walla Walla was one of two men killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

The department said Friday that 1st Lt. Mathew G. Fazzari, 25, of Walla Walla and Capt. Scott P. Pace, 39, of Brawley, Calif., were killed in Wednesday's crash.

The Fazzari family told The Union-Bulletin he was a 2010 graduate of Gonzaga University and leaves a wife and two young sons.

The two pilots were assigned to the 1st Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.
